On Sunday, May 12, Hellas Verona confirmed that they are going to take action after their fan on camera was mocking the Superga tragedy, mimicking the gesture of an aeroplane  followed by a crash. The incident happened during Hellas Verona’s clash against Torino at the Marcantonio Bentegodi Stadium in Serie A, which they lost 1-2 late in the second half.

The Superga tragedy happened on May 4, 1949, when an aeroplane departing from Lisbon, crashed on the outskirts of Turin, claiming the lives of 31 people, including the Torino players and coaching staff, along with the crew and journalists. Just a week ago, the 75th anniversary of the Superga tragedy was commemorated by the Torino football club.

When the video of the mocking gesture from the Hellas Verona fan towards the Superga tragedy, which was captured on camera from the away end of the Marcantonio Bentegodi Stadium, went viral, it sparked massive outrage on social media. Shortly after, Hellas Verona announced that they have identified and taken necessary action against the fan who mocked the Superga tragedy before talking about how it doesn’t reflect the club in any way.

Watch the video here:

“Hellas Verona FC informs that it has taken all necessary actions for the identification and removal from the stadium of the individual who today became the protagonist, during #VeronaTorino, of gestures that do not reflect the values of this Club and its great supporters,” the statement from the Italian club read on their official X account.

Notably, the next Serie A clash for Hellas Verona will be an away trip to Arechi Stadium, where they will be taking on Salernitana on Monday, May 20.
