India’s star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has maintained her status in the women’s 49 kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2022 by winning a gold medal on Saturday. This is the second gold medal in a row for the 27-year-old Indian weightlifter as she had also secured top podium finish in the 2018 Gold Coast Games.
Mirabai Chanu lifted 88 kgs in the snatch round in her second attempt and managed a lead of 12 kgs. In clean and jerk round, her first attempt of 109 kg ensured the gold medal for the defending champion, who bettered her record by lifting 113 kg in her second attempt.
Twitter was set abuzz as soon as Mirabai was announced the champion as the whole India was hoping a gold medal from the weightlifter.
