Every year, the Indian Premier League is held in the early months, to the delight of millions of fans in the Indian subcontinent and around the globe. Also known as India ka Tyohaar, league cricket is preceded by a mini-auction for three editions and a mega auction for every fourth edition.
For the 2024 season, the IPL mini-auction is set to be hosted on December 19. It will be the first time that the auction will be hosted overseas, in Dubai. With the auction approaching, here are the four things cricket fans would look forward to:
Increased player purse
The player purse for the forthcoming edition has been increased by ₹5 crore. As compared to last season’s INR 95 crore, this season, teams will have an INR 100 crore spending amount at the auction. The team purses will be updated on the auction day, depending on the players they have released and the amount that they didn’t use in the 2023 season. With a significant increase in the purse amount, it will be interesting to see which impactful purchases the teams make in the bidding war.

Last min-auction before the 2025 mega-auction
As we know, a mega IPL auction is held every three years, and with the 2022 auction being the big one, the IPL 2024 auction will be the last mini-auction before the next IPL mega auction. Ahead of this year’s auction, teams have released players in whom they are not quite prepared to invest long-term. With the mega auction for the IPL expected to happen next year, the upcoming season will help the teams assess their squad to decide who will be the three to five players they might retain for the future.

Impact of ODI World Cup 2023
With the ODI World Cup 2023 concluding before the auction, franchises will be keen to include players who made their mark in the ICC tournament. Players like Rachin Ravindra, who scored the same number of hundreds along with Virat Kohli in the tournament, will be a target for several big names. Not only this, but names like Travis Head and South Africa’s Gerald Coetzee, who emerged as a formidable force for South Africa, will be one of the top picks.

Less bidding on big names
Every season a few players grab big contracts with the franchises across different tournaments..England all-rounder, Sam Curran, became the most expensive purchase in the history of the tournament, last year. He was bought by Punjab Kings for a whopping INR 18.5 crore.
However, he couldn’t live up to everyone’s expectations. Similarly, other names like Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Mayank Agarwal, and a few more, had a poor season. Considering the record, we think franchises would avoid making such huge expenses.
