When former English cricket coach Andy Flower stepped into the coaching position of the Royals Challengers Bengaluru ahead of IPL 2024, the team already had some of the finest talents in the world but lacked in being consistent. After three years, the team under the guidance of Flower became one of the finest in the history of IPL. The team reached the playoff round in 2024, won their first-ever IPL in 2025, and continued to add another trophy to their name in 2026. This is an example of Flower's achievements not only by winning trophies but showing how a team can change by adopting a systematic approach.

The team achieved great progress over the three years. They started performing consistently, showed more maturity in dealing with high-pressure situations, and formed a well-balanced side. These changes occurred due to Flower's approach of preparation, role allocation, and systematic performance of each player.

Flower’s Journey Over The Years

IPL 2026 (Champions)

The 2026 season stands as another landmark year for Flower and RCB. The defending champions finished first in the league stage with 9 wins from 14 matches and secured a direct place in the final after a dominant 92-run victory over Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1. RCB then defeated Gujarat Titans again by five wickets in the final on May 31, 2026, to secure their second consecutive IPL title.

Across the campaign, RCB won 11 of their 16 matches. The squad delivered contributions across departments, with Virat Kohli scoring 675 runs, captain Rajat Patidar adding 486 runs, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar leading the bowling attack with 28 wickets. Flower's approach focused on maintaining tactical consistency and ensuring the team remained effective under pressure throughout the tournament.

IPL 2025 (Champions)

Prior to the 2026 championship win, Flower oversaw RCB’s maiden IPL title win in 2025. With 19 points and 9 wins out of a possible 14, RCB came second in the league table before advancing through the play-offs, securing a victory in Qualifier 1, and then beating Punjab Kings in the final by six runs.

The successful tournament saw a new face of RCB under Flower’s stewardship. The South African improved the bowling department in terms of strength and consistency, a section that RCB had always struggled with before. Flower’s meticulous planning, along with his teamwork, resulted in an all-rounded team that was not wholly dependent on its star batters to secure victory.

IPL 2024 (Playoffs)

The roots of the success of RCB lie in IPL 2024. The entire season seemed to be over after RCB had lost seven matches out of their first eight. Yet, with the help of Flower, RCB staged one of the biggest comebacks in the IPL's history. Playing as if their back was against the wall, RCB registered victories in six consecutive matches to keep them alive in their season.

This helped RCB qualify for the playoffs as the fourth placed team with 7 wins out of 14 league matches. It may seem insignificant because RCB went out of the tournament in the Eliminator round with a loss by 4 wickets against Rajasthan Royals. What matters is that RCB got into the right mindframe that would help them win two successive IPL titles the following years.
