The IPL 2024 retention list has been announced by all 10 teams and there have been some surprising retentions by a few franchises as the players who didn’t perform much to their expectations in the last season found their place in the team. Here, in this article, we will see about five surprising retentions in IPL 2024.
1. Prithvi Shaw:
Delhi Capitals opening batsman performed very poorly in IPL 2023 by managing to record only 106 runs from 8 innings. He was dropped for the remaining games also considering his form with the bat as he played only 8 games but his retention comes as a shocker for every cricket enthusiast.

2. Mayank Agarwal:
Mayank Agarwal’s failure with the bat has been one of the major reasons for SRH’s failure in the last IPL season as he managed to score only 270 runs from 10 innings with only one fifty (83) to his name in a dead rubber match against Mumbai Indians. His retention after a poor season has been a surprise.

3. Deepak Hooda:
Deepak Hooda has been the biggest disappointment in the 2023 IPL season as he managed to score only 84 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 93.33. Under Krunal Pandya’s captaincy, he missed out on playing alternate games in that IPL edition, hence despite going through a poor run with bat, his retention seems to biggest mystery.

4. Umran Malik:
Umran Malik took only 5 wickets in the 2023 IPL from 8 games at a very poor economy of 10.85. His brutal pace was a big enemy for him in the last IPL season, but even then SRH have retained him despite not showing any promising signs.

5. Amit Mishra:
Amit Mishra had taken 7 wickets in the 2023 IPL from 7 games at an economy of 7.84. With age not being on his side (currently 41 years), it’s been very surprising for LSG to retain him for the 2024 IPL season instead of going for a young bowler.
