The Punjab Kings star all-rounder Shashank Singh opened up on how Shreyas Iyer helped him during his rough patch in the field mid-tournament. Shashank Singh was dropping way too many catches and he even dropped 3 in a single game. Though Punjab Kings were going through a difficult patch with a series of losses, Shreyas Iyer absorbed all the pressure and didn’t vent it on any of his teammates. Shashank Singh stated that the skipper even asked him if he needed any help after the match and that he supported him even at a time when things were going downhill for the Punjab Kings.

"I dropped many catches, a few of those catches changed the course of the match also but not even for once Shreyas blamed me. He came to my room later that day to ask if everything was alright & whether I needed some help - not once did he make me feel like a culprit because when you're losing and you're also a captain, you have to take the heat as a leader. There are pressures, to be able to absorb all that for the team is something he has done amazingly well," said Shashank Singh on the captaincy of the PBKS skipper, Shreyas Iyer.

Shreyas Iyer gears up for new role as India’s T20I captain

The Punjab Kings were the most dominant tournament in the first half of the league as they were unbeaten in the first 7 games. Shreyas Iyer was credited for his brilliant captaincy and the success of the side. Shashank Singh was sloppy in the field at one phase as he wasn’t able to take catches and there was visible frustration in the dugout every time a catch was dropped. Shreyas Iyer did a great job as a leader to not let the pressure impact Shashank Singh and he stood as a strong pillar of support for the player despite his lean patch in the field.

There have been several talks going on regarding the decision to give India’s T20I captaincy to Shreyas Iyer, despite him not being part of the T20 setup for a couple of years. The PBKS skipper proved his worth in the IPL as he won the title with KKR in 2024 and he captained PBKS to the final in the 2025 season.

The form of Suryakumar Yadav was also an important reason for the inclusion of Shreyas Iyer in the squad as the slot had freed up in the middle order. Shreyas Iyer has been highly rated by the experts and they will be hoping that he can fill in the shoes of Suryakumar Yadav. Shreyas Iyer’s first challenge as the T20I captain would be the series against England and he will be hoping to kick off his captaincy stint on a positive note with India.
