The 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) commenced on Saturday, March 22. The opening match saw defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru, however they suffered a beating at their own den, the Eden Gardens. However, there will be some exciting clashes throughout the course of the tournament, including some nail-biting thrillers, the fight for Purple and Orange Cap will also get intense.
It is to be noted that the Purple Cap is given to a player who emerges as the highest wicket-taker in the 74-match tournament. On the contrary, the Orange Cap is give to the top run-getter of the season. Recalling the last edition of IPL, Harshal Patel finished as the winner of the Purple Cap, claiming 24 wickets in 14 matches. He bowled a total of 49 overs during the two-month long tournament, conceding 477 runs at an average of 19.87 and an economy of 9.73. His best bowling innings which saw him finish with 3/15, came against Gujarat Titans.
Despite his heroics for Punjab last season, his team finished at ninth place in the IPL points table. After 14 matches, PBKS registered five wins and four losses, failing to qualify the playoffs. However, they will be aiming to overturn this result and eye their maiden IPL trophy in IPL 2025.
