The announcement of the 17-member Asia Cup squad for Team India on August 21, Sunday, had a surprise inclusion of the young rookie Tilak Varma. The 20-year-old, who made his international debut in the T20I format earlier this month against the West Indies, put up a splendid display of batsmanship against a very good bowling attack.
In his first ever T20I series at the highest level, Tilak Varma managed to score a lot of runs, which wasn’t the initial expectation for many fans and experts alike. Also, Tilak Varma managed to pick his first wicket in international cricket, scalping for Nicholas Pooran in the fifth and final T20I at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill.

During the third T20I, the rising sensation was left stranded on 49 not out, after the stand-in captain Hardik Pandya tonked a six to finish the match. It sparked a major controversy, to which the 20-year-old later said that he never thinks about his personal milestones.
The wonderful start to the international career for the Hyderabad-born cricketer prompted the Indian selectors to pick him for the continental cricket tournament, which will be played in the ODI format. During his brief stay at the highest level, Tilak Varma was put under tough situations with the bat in hand by the West Indies bowlers, during the T20I series in the Americas. From the first match onwards, the 20-year-old was able to stay calm in the face of adversity, whenever the wickets had fallen early in the Indian innings. He showcased the temperament to withstand pressure against the highly skilled opponents, while ensuring that Team India scored runs at a fair clip to post big totals on the board.
