With the final deadline to announce the player retentions for all the IPL teams is set to run out in just over a day’s time, the rumour mill is swirling with lots of comments about who is staying or leaving a particular franchise. As far as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are concerned, a report from ESPNcricinfo detailed that the team management is looking to part ways with their current captain Faf du Plessis, 40, which would usher in a new era for the franchise going into the IPL 2025.
But the same report further stated that with Faf du Plessis gone, RCB are looking to give Virat Kohli the captaincy of the franchise once again after he led them for the better part of a decade before quitting from his post ahead of IPL 2022. Whether the rumours turn out to be true or not, it will be known on Thursday, October 31, when all the 10 teams announce their player retention.
In the meantime, SportsTiger looks at three reasons why Virat Kohli might end up returning as the captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Lack of proven captaincy options available
With the Royal Challengers Bengaluru searching for their first IPL title since the inception of the tournament back in 2008, there is a sense of desperation in how the franchise operates on the field and behind the scenes. Amidst all that, Virat Kohli, the former Indian captain, has been a rock from them, who has stayed loyal for more than 16 years, and with not many proven captaincy options available in the market, it could be an easy decision for RCB to appoint him as the new captain, at least for the upcoming 2025 season, and take it from there.
