South African cricketing great AB de Villiers issued a major update on Virat Kohli's return to professional cricket. Indian batting legend took a break from international cricket ahead of India's five-match Test series, citing personal reasons. Later it was revealed that Kohli had taken a break because of the birth of his second child, who was born on February 15.

Since then there has been no confirmation about Kohli's return as the Board for Control of Cricket in India released a statement that revealed that the top-order batter wasn't part of the squad for the fourth and fifth Tests. Kohli's absence further raised questions from experts like Sunil Gavaskar, who questioned whether he would feature in the upcoming Indian Premier League.

Addressing these comments, AB de Villiers disclosed that Kohli invited him to join the Royal Challengers Bangalore side as a mentor to help the batters in the team. ABD also spoke about being part of the commentary team for the IPL.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, “Nothing is confirmed yet,” de Villiers said. “Virat Kohli has hinted that he might want me to come over just to spend a bit of time with him and some of the batter perhaps. I think the call has got to come from Andy Flower, Faf and the team. But for now, I am just going to be in Mumbai for the first few weeks of the IPL and doing a bit of commentary so do watch our live streams. I will also be back at the backend for the knockouts.”

Coming back to Sunil Gavaskar's comments, the 1983 World Cup asked whether Kohli would return to the IPL after missing the Test series against England. Speaking at the Star Sports Event at the Indian Institute of Management in Ranchi, he said, “Kya woh khelenge… kuch reason ke liye khel nahi rahe hain, shaayad ho sakta hai ki IPL ki liye bhi na khelein (Will he play? He is not playing because of some reason, perhaps he may not play in IPL as well.”
