Sir  Alastair Cook, the former England captain, has issued an apology for making a bizarre Alex Carey haircut claim on day 1 of the third Ashes Test match at Headingley. On July 6, while speaking on BBC Test Match Special, the 38-year-old relayed the story about the Australian wicket-keeper batter not paying, in his knowledge, after getting a trim from a barber, while he was there for his own haircut.

Since the second Ashes Test match at Lord’s, where Alex Carey inflicted a controversial run out of Jonny Bairstow, he has been having a hard time in the United Kingdom. The Aussie has been called as the “Ashes Villain” by some sections of the English media, while the fans and experts aren’t too shy away from expressing their criticism for him either.

Notably, after the story from Alastair Cook gained traction, Cricket Australia came in support of Alex Carey, rubbishing the claims as untrue. Steve Smith, the former Australian captain, took to the Threads and said, “I can confirm that Alex Carey has not had a haircut since we were in London. Get your facts right @thesun.”

Later on, the retired English cricketer apologised on BBC Test Match Special while saying, “There’s also been a bit of fuss around on a rainy day, a bit of news about a haircut which might have been discussed on radio the other day. A case of mistaken identity, so I apologise for the mistaken identity to Alex Carey.”

Australia vs England Test match hangs in the balance at Headingley

At the end of day 3 of the third Ashes Test match at Headingley, England were 27/0 in their second innings, needing 224 more runs to achieve victory. Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley have given a yet another quick start for the hosts, which might be the best way for the hosts to approach the run chase for the remainder of the Test match.
