Argentina star Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez received a two-year ban for testing positive for taking a banned substance. Gomez joined Italian side Monza as a free agent in September tested positive for a banned substance that he took before the World Cup 2022, where he ended up lifting the coveted trophy alongside Lionel Messi. In the tournament, Gomez was featured twice at the World Cup in Qatar in games against Saudi Arabia and Mexico.
As per reports by Relevo, the footballer has been hit with a two-year suspension from all kinds of football activities. The 35-year-old then blamed his positive test on a children’s syrup that he took after a bad night’s sleep without first consulting any medical staff. Notably, Gomez was a Sevilla player at that time, and he didn’t inform the club doctors.
The footballer’s Sevilla contract was terminated on the final day of the transfer window, and he returned to Italy to be with Monza. The Buenos Aires-born would have the right to appeal to reduce the sanction. However, his reasoning won’t be helpful for the footballer given the clear rules.
Speaking of the questioned substance, it is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). A few other reports also suggest that the footballer is at risk of being stripped of his World Cup and Europa League medals. However, there is no confirmation from any official from the Argentina team.
