Amelia Kerr has become the first bowler to bag a fifer for Mumbai Indians (MI) after she racked up 5/38 figures against UP Warriorz (UPW) in the 16th match of the WPL 2025 getting played at the Ekana Stadium. Batting first, UPW got a fierce start from their openers Grace Harris and George Voll as both accumulated 74 runs together for the first wicket off just 48 balls. In the crunch situation, Hayley Matthews stepped up for the visitors and delivered the first breakthrough to her team in the form of Harris, who departed after scoring 28 off 25. However, MI couldn’t be relieved after picking up the 31-year-old Australian as Voll was still at the crease.
Kerr launched an attack from her side in the 10th over of the game as she got rid of Kiran Navgire, who was shown her way to the pavilion with a three-ball duck. In the next over, Nat Sciver-Brunt cleaned up Voll and provided her team the much-needed breakthrough. Following Voll’s dismissal, the home team kept on losing wickets in regular intervals and failed to capitalise the start they got from their openers. After Navgire, Kerr went on to claim the crucial scalps of Vrinda Dinesh, Chinelle Henry, and captain Deepti Sharma. Riding on Kerr’s superb performance, MI halted UPW at a score of 150/9.
Amelia Kerr breaks into the record books with her best WPL bowling figures
The 24-year-old’s magnificent bowling against UPW has made her the sixth player to grab a five-wicket haul in WPL. She has also become the first New Zealander to register a fifer to her name in the prominent league. Her bowling numbers are also the best for MI in the tournament which has been played for the last three years.
Following their youngster’s brilliant bowling show, MI batters will look to chase down the target and fortify their team’s chances to qualify for the playoffs. After this encounter, Harmanpreet Kaur’s team will confront Gujarat Giants (GG) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on March 10 and 11 respectively.
