Nishant Dev, India’s ac boxer in the 71 kg category, has qualified for the Round of 16 at the Hangzhou Asian Games after defeating Dipesh Lama of Nepal by a unanimous decision (5-0) in his opening bout. Dev dominated the contest from the start and landed some powerful punches on his opponent, who could not match his speed and accuracy.

Dev will now face Vietnam’s Bui Phuoc Tung in the next round. Hailing from Karnal, Haryana, Dev is one of India’s biggest medal hopes in boxing at the Asian Games. He had won a bronze medal at the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, earlier this year.

Nishant Dev made a name for himself when, in his first international competition, he advanced to the quarterfinals of the Elite World Boxing Championship in 2021. Since he had never even competed at the junior or youth level internationally previously, it was his first international tournament. He played without any pressure, and his brave boxing astounded everyone.
