The Nigar Sultana-led Bangladesh Women beat Pakistan Women to settle for a bronze at the Asian Games 2023. The side after winning the toss had invited Pakistan to bat first. Shorna Akter starred with the ball for the Bangla Women as she finished with the figures of 3/16 in her four-over spell and was well supported by other bowlers like Sanjida Akter Meghla (2/11), Marufa Akter, Nahida to name a few.

The side restricted Pakistan to 64/9 in their 20 overs and then with crucial contributions from Shamima Sultana (13), Shathi Rani (13) and Shorna Akter (14), the side sealed the match in 18.2 overs to win by five wickets on a sluggish cricket surface. It is to be noted that it is only for the second time that Bangladesh have beaten Pakistan.

Talking about Bangladesh’s campaign at the Asian Games 2023, the side who entered the quarterfinals on the basis of their T20I ICC Rankings entered the semifinal without playing Hong Kong in the quarterfinal due to a complete washout. However, they were then beaten by India Women by eight wickets in the semifinal on September 24 at the Pingfeng Campus Cricket Field.

 

On the other hand, Pakistan Women also entered the semifinal on the basis of their ranking as their match against Indonesia Women was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain. However, they succumbed to a six-wicket loss against Sri Lanka Women in the semifinal.

 

While the women’s cricket event at the Asian Games 2023 will culminate today with India Women eyeing a gold medal in their maiden appearance at the quadrennial event. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side will take on Sri Lanka Women at 11:30 am IST at the Pingfeng Campus Cricket Field in Hangzhou later today in the final.
