The 19th edition of the Asian Games rolled in Hangzhou, China. The quadrennial event, which was pushed back to 2023 from 2022, commenced on 23rd September and will be played until 8th October. Athletes from across 54 countries will take the centre stage in a total of 41 sports and 61 disciplines.
Although the opening ceremony of the event took place on September 23, a few events kick started on September 19, which included cricket, football, volleyball, beach volleyball to name a few. Additionally, 74 Paris Olympics quotas across nine sports are also available, which includes tennis, archery, artistic swimming, boxing, breaking, hockey and others.
Talking about India’s performance at the Games, the Asian sub-continent has been a powerhouse since the tournament started in 1951, having participated in all its editions. However, their best result came at the Jakarta 2018, finishing eighth with a total of 70 medals, including 16 gold, 23 silver and 31 bronze.
The second day saw India grab five medals after the glittery opening ceremony marked the quadrennial event open on 23rd September. While the Rowing event saw India take three medals, two silvers and a bronze, Indian women shooters had a bright start too, clinching a silver in the women's 10m air rifle event and Ramita taking a bronze in Women's 10m air rifle individual event.
