Asian Games gold medallist Tajinderpal Singh Toor, etched history as he broke the 19-year-old national record in shot put on his way to clinch the gold at the Asian Indoor Athletic Championships 2024 in Tehran. The 29-year-old recorded his best throw of 19.72m to defend his title.
Moreover, Toor broke the 19-year-old national record of 19.60m throw, which was previously recorded by Vikas Gowda in 2005. On his way to register the best throw, Tajjinder only took two throws, marking four-no throws as he crossed the 19m-mark in both attempts.
Apart from Tajinderpal Singh Toor, Dhanveer barely missed the bronze as he registered his best throw of 18.59m. Mehdi Saberi, however, took the bronze with a throw of 18.74m.
Earlier in the tournament, star Indian hurdler Jyothi Yarraji broke her national record in the women’s 60m hurdles to win a gold at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships 2024, clocking 8.12 seconds. Meanwhile, Harmilan Bains won a gold at the women’s 1500m final with a timing of 4:29.55s.
On Day 1, India finished with a total of three gold medals, topping the medal tally, followed by China with two golds and one silver. Moreover, Kazakhstan stood at third place with one gold, silver and bronze each, followed by Kyrgyzstan (2 medals) and Japan (3 medals) to complete the top five.
