On Saturday, December 14, incessant rain forced umpires to call off Day 1 of the third Test at The Gabba in Brisbane. With the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test series currently levelled 1-1, the action shifted to the third Test in Brisbane. The third Test did not have the start which was expected as rain played a spoilsport, forcing the umpires to call early stumps.

Earlier in the day, Rohit Sharma-led Team India won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first. With Nathan McSweeney and Usman Khawaja once again starting the proceedings in the middle for the hosts, the game saw the play put to halt after just 5.3 overs due to slight drizzle. After a delay of half an hour, the two teams got back in the middle putting up 28 runs.

Rain plays spoilsport on Day 1 of third Test at The Gabba

After a brief stay in the middle for 7.5 overs, the drizzle returned, forcing the game to stop. With the scorecard reading 28/0 after 13.2 overs, rain simply intensified with puddles on the field. Rain just escalated with the second session being completely washed out and thus forcing the umpires to call off stumps early on Day 1.
