Australia, batting first, got off to a poor start after losing Josh Inglis for a two-ball duck in the third over. But star batter Steven Smith held the other end and scored a confidence-boosting 55 at the top of the order as he continued his streaky form from the three-game series against India. Supporting Smith, Alex Carey chipped in with a 28-run knock.
As Australia continued losing wickets, Cameron Green added 34 while Mitchell Starc contributed with a 22 to set up a 167-run total. Then in the second innings, the world saw the first glimpse of World Cup Starc as the left-arm pacer took a hattrick over the first two overs of his spell.
