During his epic innings, Quinton de Kock became the second batter in the history of South Africa cricket to score consecutive hundreds in the ODI World Cup, after the former captain AB de Villiers achieved this feat in the 2011 edition. As a wicket-keeper batter, he also became the joint second highest hundred scorer in the history of the quadrennial spectacle with two, alongside AB de Villiers and Brendan Taylor, while Kumar Sangakkara has five to his name.

Notably, the captain of Australia, Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bowl first at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, while wondering about how the pitch on the newly relaid square will play. His decision proved to be tough for the Australian cricket team, after Quinton de Kock and the captain of South Africa, Temba Bavuma, took the initiative as the overs went by.

They stitched together a vital 108 run stand for the first wicket within 20 overs, to put South Africa in a strong position. While Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen were dismissed in quick succession by Glenn Maxwell, the left-handed opener Quinton de Kock kept the pressure on Australia, to bring up his second consecutive hundred in the ODI World Cup 2023, before Adam Zampa took his wicket for 109 off 105.
