West Indies defeated Australia by eight runs to end the Test series at 1-1 tie on January 28, Sunday. The hosts, the Aussies had recorded a 10-wicket win in the first game of the series, but were put up with challenges as the Kraigg Brathwaite-led side registered a historic win at the mighty Gabba. The visitors won the toss and invited their counterparts to bowl first, as they put up a decent total of 311 runs in 108 overs. Caribbean batters including Kavem Hodge, Joshua Da Silva, and Kevin Sinclair came up with their respective half-centuries to help their side establish their dominance on the Australian soil.
In the first innings, Mitchell Starc scalped four wickets, while Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon chipped in two and skipper Pat Cummins picked one wicket. The target seemed small for the hosts, as they began their chase. However, things took a shaky turn for the recently crowned World Champions as soon as they lost their opener Usman Khawaja on 75 runs. Apart from Alex Carey and Pat Cummins, no other name could come up with a decent performance.

The heroics of the Windies bowling unit comprising Kemar Roach, Alzarri Joseph, and Shamar Jospeh compelled the Aussies to surrender and declare their innings at 289. In the third innings, the Windies took the field to continue their momentum, but the home side proved to be much more lethal and they were wrapped up at just 193. A more confident home side took on the field in the fourth innings to chase down a decent target set by the rivals.
Despite Steven Smith’s 91* and Cameron Green’s 42 runs, the champions couldn’t continue their brilliant run and fell to the visitors’ bowling tactics. Shamar Joseph completed his seven-wicket haul to help the side win a Test match against Australia after 27 years.
