Barcelona have lost their second court appeal to register Spanish forward Dani Olmo for the second half of the ongoing football season after he was signed for a whopping transfer fee of £45.6m from RB Leipzig in the summer. However, when Barcelona were unable to meet the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules in regard to La Liga’s wage cap restrictions, Dani Olmo was allowed to be temporarily registered for just the first half of the season.
Just a day before the deadline of Tuesday, December 31, to get Dani Olmo registered to play for them in 2025, Barcelona appealed to a second court on Monday, to overturn the decision of the first court, but they rejected it. With that, if the Catalan Giants aren’t able to fulfill the FFP rules in regard to the signing of the 26-year-old, then he will become a free agent tomorrow with many Premier League clubs interested in signing him.
Barcelona secured a deal to sell VIP boxes at Camp Nou to generate revenue for registering Dani Olmo
As per the statement from La Liga, the precautionary registration of Dani Olmo for the first half of the season was rejected by the court after "none of the conditions necessary for the adoption of the precautionary measure were met". They also defended the competence of their Delegate Commission in regard to the league’s budgeting rules, which has meant that Barcelona were not able to register their player as per the decision of its Budget Validation Body, and it was further backed up by multiple concerning bodies in Europe.
In the meantime, Barcelona secured a deal recently, to sell VIP boxes at Camp Nou to Middle East investors for £82.9 million, with an aim to get Dani Olmo registered for the second half of the season. But, despite the hopes of the Catalan giants, the deal needs approval from La Liga today, and only then, they will be able to fulfill the demands of the FFP rules to keep the attacking midfielder at Camp Nou.
The picture in regard to whether Dani Olmo stays at Barcelona or becomes a free agent will become clearer as the world of football heads into 2025 in a day’s time.
