During the League A Group 3 match in the UEFA Nations League, Florian Wirtz, the German midfielder, suffered an ankle injury while playing against the Netherlands at the Allianz Arena in Munich. Bayer Leverkusen, the reigning Bundesliga champions, revealed that their star player injured the joint capsule in his right ankle on international duty without being involved in a challenge against the opposition player.

Notably, despite Florian Wirtz getting substituted at half-time by her club teammate Robert Andrich, Germany managed to defeat the Netherlands 1-0 with a 64th minute goal from Jamie Leweling, to extend their lead at the top of League A Group 3. After four matches, the Germans have won three and drawn one, to accumulate 10 points, which is five more than Netherlands and Hungary in second and third places respectively, while Bosnia-Herzegovina are in fourth and bottom place in the group.

Florian Wirtz doubtful to play against Eintracht Frankfurt this weekend

Bayer Leverkusen described the injury to Florian Wirtz as minor, but they didn’t clarify when he will be rejoining team training. With that, the 21-year-old is in doubt to play for the German champions during their upcoming game against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga, along with their trip to the French club Brest in the UEFA Champions League next week.

After being named as the player of the season in Bundesliga last campaign, which saw Bayer Leverkusen become the invincible, Florian Wirtz is already the joint top-scorer in the league this season with four goals alongside Victor Boniface. He has also created joint-most chances (19) in the Bundesliga this season, equal with Alex Grimaldo, pushing himself to be the best player in the league this season as well.
