Franchises will be allowed for the maximum number of retention in the forthcoming season of the Indian Premier League. After the meeting of the governing body on September 28, in Bengaluru, it has been finalised that franchises would be able to retain up to six players each irrespective of their nationality. Not only this, it has also been confirmed that each franchise will get one RTM, while the Impact Player rule will stay for the forthcoming season of the IPL.
Apart from this, the auction purse for IPL 2025 mega auction will get bigger by INR 20 crore, which means each franchise will get INR 120 crore for the auction. According to the final IPL 2025 retention rules, franchises will be required to retain at least one uncapped player. In addition, all the six players a franchise will be allowed to retain can be through direct retention, a combination of retention and RTM or even just RTM.
Cost of each retention for IPL franchises
According to the latest rules announced, if a franchise wants to retain five players, here’s how much they will have to pay.
Total Purse = Rs. 120cr
1st retention: Rs. 18cr
2nd retention: Rs. 14cr
3rd retention: Rs. 11cr
4th retention: Rs. 18cr
5th retention: Rs. 14cr
It means that if a franchise retaining five players before the auction will lose INR 75 crore from the overall purse.
IPL to bring back rule of retired players being declared uncapped
Another notable point that was mentioned in the meeting was that IPL will bring back the rule which allowed players who retired from international cricket five years ago to be categorised as uncapped players. With this rule, former champions Chennai Super Kings will be able to retain the services of ex-captain MS Dhoni for another season without spending hefty amounts from their player purse. If the franchise retains their former captain, the cricketer would be paid an amount of INR 4 Crore.
Teams to be granted one RTM, Impact Player rule to be retained
Another two major discussions at the meeting took place around the RTM Card and the Impact Player rule. As per the discussion, each team will be granted one Right-to-Match Card, which would allow the teams to match the highest bid of the player they had previously released. It would play a critical rule for franchises to retain their top players without engaging in bidding.
Moreover, it was also decided that the Impact Player rule will stay for the upcoming season of the tournament. Owing to this rule, nine of the ten highest totals in IPL history have been recorded. It allows teams to sub out a first XI player and field a specialist batter or bowler, depending on the situation.
