The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold a General Governing Council meeting with the owners of all ten Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises at BCCI’s headquarters in Mumbai on Wednesday, July 31. While the meeting will address the concerned parties over several key topics around the cash rich league, including team purse, retentions, including the Right to Match (RTM) options.
But in a big update, it is being speculated that the Indian cricket board is also eyeing to monitor the availability of players and looking to take actions against foreign players over their last-minute withdrawals. According to a report published by Cricbuzz, the IPL franchises have requested the BCCI to take action on this matter, questioning their commitments.
“The actions of players such as Jason Roy, Alex Hales, and Wanindu Hasaranga, to name a few, who have withdrawn from the IPL on various occasions in the past - ostensibly because of receiving a low bid - have raised concerns of the IPL management. None-too-convincing reasons for their withdrawals have ranged from personal issues to injuries, leaving franchises less than pleased,” a Cricbuzz report read.
It is to be noted that in the last edition of the IPL, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) recalled players for bilateral series seeing the T20 World Cup 2024 ahead. The decision led to the disruption among franchise, forcing last minute changes in their best XI. Moreover, England captain, Jos Buttler had also expressed displeasure with this decision, suggesting that there shouldn’t be any bilateral series during the IPL.

The report from Cricbuzz also adds that BCCI is set to look into the matter of player’s availability. It is to be noted that some players prefer to not include themselves in the mega auction and instead look for mini-auction to get a massive sum in their contracts.
Apart from this, the BCCI is also set to discuss on player retentions, including Right to Match, team purse and several other features of the cash-rich league.
