In the fifth and final Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, India suffered a tough defeat by six wickets against Australia, losing the series 1-3 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). After winning the last four BGT Test series in a row, twice at home and twice in away conditions, the Indian cricket team were well within reach of retaining for the fifth consecutive time following the first three matches, but they fell away drastically in Melbourne and Sydney.

Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, came into the BGT Test series 2024-25 with not a lot of runs to his name, and he struggled massively in his three appearances, scoring just 31 runs in five innings at a shocking average of 6.20. After skipping the first Test due to personal reasons, Rohit Sharma opted out of playing the BGT series decider at the SCG, and India went on to lose the match and the series for the first-time in just over a decade.
