Borussia Dortmund’s 3-0 clash against Freiburg in the Bundesliga saw a 10-minute halt after protestors threw tennis balls and chocolat e coins on the field. The protests came in opposition to the investment proposal by the German Football Association. It was recently revealed that two-thirds of Bundesliga sides voted for an investor to purchase stakes in the Bundesliga media rights company.
This is not the first time that a football match has been interrupted; Bochum's 3-0 win over Union Berlin in December 2023 and Heidenheim's 1-1 draw with Wolfsburg last month saw stoppage as fans threw tennis balls on the pitch. Apart from that, Dortmund’s 20th January clash against Cologne saw an eight-minute delay as fans from both sides threw balls and gold coins on the pitch.
Dortmund-Freiburg clash gets suspended for 10 minutes
In the Friday clash between Dortmund and Freiburg, tennis balls and chocolate coins were thrown during the 36th minute of the game at Signal Iduna Park. Dortmund had already gained a 1-0 lead, owing to the stunning opener by Donyell Malen. Home captain Emre Can was seen speaking to the supporters before the game eventually started with 12 minutes added to the first half.
Malen scored his second goal for the night in the seventh minute of injury time. The second half of the game, but the action was paused for just a few moments. Niclas Fullkrug netted the third goal for his side on his 31st birthday, as goal-less Freiburg seemed to have surrendered.
