Czech-American tennis legend Martina Navratilova said that the Afghanistan cricket team should be banned after saying that Taliban men are evil. Navratilova highlighted the problems faced by Afghanistan women after the Taliban took over the South Asian country. Not only this, but she also condemned their oppressive policies against the women, which have been criticised by several nations. Notably, Taliban returned to the country four years back, and since then, women have faced heavy oppressions. Since its return, Taliban banned post-primary education for girls and women, as well as restricted them from access to public spaces.
Martina Navratilova took to social media and heavily criticised the militant movement. Recently, the Taliban banned women from working in the carpet weaving industry. This has left many widows and breadwinners unemployed. She reposted a tweet on her X account, which said, “A new Taliban ban has forbidden women from working in the carpet weaving industry, leaving many widows and sole breadwinners unemployed. Despite earlier restrictions on office work, some women had relied on these labor-intensive jobs—until now.” The former tennis player reposted it by adding, “Taliban men are evil. I will keep saying it because it’s true. And boycott the damn cricket team!!!!”
Martina Nabratilova defends Simone Biles after criticism for winning Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year
The 68-year-old recently stood up in defence of iconic American gymnast Simone Biles after she faced criticism following winning the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year. Notably, Biles was a key part of Team USA during their Paris Olympics 2024 campaign, where she had a record-breaking campaign. She won three golds in the Team, All-around, and Vault events as well as one silver in the Floor Exercise. Not only this, but she also won other events including the U.S. National Championships 2024.
Biles was honoured with the title of the Sports illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year. However, a social media user claimed that Caitlin Clark or MLB’s MVP Shohei Ohtani should have won. The user had tweeted, "This is a joke. She was relevant for 2 weeks this summer. Caitlin Clark and Shohei Ohtani were relevant for months.” Martina came in the defence of the player and said, "You really don’t know sh*t about sports.”
