The Brazilian football team suffered a humiliating 1-4 loss at the hands of Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier match on Tuesday, March 25, at the Mas Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires. Following the big defeat, Brazil captain Marquinhos issued an apology to the fans while talking to a Brazilian TV channel, saying “sorry” to them for playing badly, especially at the start of the game, performing way below their standards.
For Argentina, the likes of Julian Alvarez, Enzo Fernandez, and Alexis Mac Allister scored in the first half, while Guiliano Simeone got his name on the scoresheet in the 71st minute of the second half. Matheus Cunha was the only goal-scorer for Brazil in the first half of the all-important qualifying match for a spot at the World Cup just a year down the line, but it was far from enough when the hosts ran away with the proceedings.
It's hard to talk about it in the heat of the moment... It's embarrassing: Marquinhos
With a comprehensive victory over Brazil at the Mas Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina completed a double over Brazil in the FIFA World Cup Qualifier, to consolidate their first spot in the 10-team group by a whopping eight points. They had earlier gotten the better of them in November 2023 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro by margin of 1-0, thanks to Nicholas Otamendi’s goal.
While speaking to Brazilian TV Globo, captain Marquinhos was quoted as saying about the loss, “What we did here today can't happen again. It's hard to talk about it in the heat of the moment... It's embarrassing. We started the game very badly, far below what we could do and they're on a great run of confidence. They knew how to play smart.. I'm sorry for our fans.”
Argentina are currently in first place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier in the South America continent with 31 points in 14 matches, while Brazil are in fourth place with 21 points in the same number of matches.
