The Brooklyn Nets have planned to retire Vince Carter’s number 15 during the 2024-25 season of the NBA. The team announced on Wednesday, May 15, that they will hang Carter’s jersey as he heads into the Basketball Hall of Fame this summer. However, there is no official word from the Toronto Raptors. Carter spent a total of four and a half seasons with New Jersey from 2004 to 2009, before the team’s name was rebranded as the Brooklyn Nets in 2012.
He went on to form one of the most unique and dynamic duos of the NBA with Hall-of-Fame point guard Jason Kidd. During his tenure with three playoff appearances with the Nets and even made it to the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2006 and 2007. With the Nets hanging Carter’s jersey, number 15 will become the seventh number retired by the franchise after Jason Kidd, Drazen Petrovic, John Willamson, Bill Melchionni, Julius Erving, and Buck Williams.
Notably, Bill Russell’s jersey number 6 has also been retired across the league. Speaking of Carter’s career with the team, he was roped in a trade with the Toronto Raptors on December 17, 2004, in exchange for Alonzo Mourning, Aaron Williams, and Eric Williams and two first-round picks. With this, his seven-year run in Toronto came to an end.
