The captain of the Canada cricket team, Nicholas Kirton, has been granted bail after he pleaded not guilty in a drugs case at a court in Bridgetown, Barbados. After landing in the Caribbean nation on Sunday, March 30, Nicholas Kirton was detained by the police at the airport for possession, trafficking, importation, and intent to supply cannabis as per a report before being granted bail on Friday, April 4.

Notably, the report from Starcom Network, the details of which was published by ESPNcricinfo, while Nicholas Kirton is now on a bail, he has to be Barbados to take part in the next court hearing in the case on June 2. With that, the 26-year-old is expected to go back home to Canada, but his position in the Canada cricket team is now under question especially with the inaugural edition of the North Americas Cup set to happen later this month, a tournament which will be played between five nations.

Cricket Canada had released an official statement on the drugs case involving Nicholas Kirton before he was granted bail on Friday morning in a Barbados court. They wrote, “Cricket Canada has been made aware of the recent allegations and detainment involving national team player Nicholas Kirton. We are actively monitoring the situation and closely following developments as they unfold. Cricket Canada is committed to ensuring transparency and will provide updates as more details become available.”

Apart from that, Cricket Canada also reiterated its stance in regards to upholding the integrity of the sport while maintaining that their men’s cricket team is focused on preparing for the North Americas Cup, and said, “We take this matter seriously and remain steadfast in upholding the highest standards of integrity and accountability within the sport.”

“While this situation is being addressed, we would like to assure the public that our national men's team is fully focused on their preparations for the upcoming North America Cup, set to begin on April 18th in the Cayman Islands,” Cricket Canada added.
