The third round of the EFL Cup 2022-23 continued on Wednesday night as 17 Premier League teams were in action. The third round fixtures in the Carabao Cup shell shocked the fans with its dramatical results as eight Premier League clubs crashed out of the competition and two of them were eliminated by League 2 clubs.
Defending Premier League champions Manchester City were too strong for Chelsea while the league toppers, Arsenal were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Brighton and Hove Albion.
Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez scored a goal each in a span of five minutes to help Manchester City beat Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium while Bournemouth scored four goals to beat Everton by 4-1 and Leicester City defeated Newport County 3-0 in the third round.
Premier League giants and current league toppers Arsenal crashed out of the Carabao Cup after losing to Brighton and Hove Albion 1-3 in a home game while Tottenham Hotspur faced an horror defeat against the bottom-placed Premier League side Nottingham Forest. The Spurs lost 2-0 from 10-man Forest at the City Ground on Wednesday night.
Reigning EFL Cup champions Liverpool survived in an intense penalty shootout against Derby County to beat them 3-2 on penalties after a goalless full time. Liverpool and Derby County were 1-1 after their starting three attempts, however, the Reds clinched the win as Caoimhín Kelleher saved the final kick.
In other matches, Newcastle United defeated Crystal Palace 3-2 on penalties while West Ham faced 9-10 defeat on penalties from second-tier club Blacburn Rovers after ending the regular play at 2-2. Brentford faced a home defeat against League 2 club Gillingham by 5-6 on penalties.
Southampton eliminated Sheffield Wednesday 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the full-time. Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated Leeds United 1-0 at the Molineux Stadium as Boubacar Traore scored a late winner for the Wolves.
