Chamari Athapaththu, the Sri Lanka captain opened up on her retirement from international cricket. However, the veteran Lankan cricketer quashed all the rumours as she looks up to World Cup qualifiers, scheduled to be played in April 2024. However, she further clarified that the WC Qualifiers will decide her future in cricket.
“I’m still not decided [on retirement],” she said in East London, where the Sri Lankan captain will play South Africa in the ODI series. “We can talk about it later. At the moment, I’m focused on the [South Africa] ODIs and the World Cup qualifiers. Let’s see in the future,” she furt her added.
These statements from the 34-year-old comes after the cricketer dropped hints about her retirement in a now-deleted Facebook post. In one of her posts, she mentioned, “last duty for my country”. Moreover, on Sunday, April 7, Athapaththu posted another picture and wrote, “Review DRS” with a winking emoji. “Some decisions are very difficult. But at some point in life we have to make such decisions,” she added with a heart and Sri Lanka flag emoji and a trophy.
The 34-year-old will lead the Sri Lankan side in the upcoming T20 World Cup Qualifiers, which start April 25 in Abu Dhabi. Sri Lanka are grouped alongside Thailand, Scotland, Uganda and the USA.
