New Zealand and Chennai Super Kings Devon Conway has been ruled out of the first Test against Australia in Wellington. Part of a two-match Test series, the opening red-ball fixture is slated to kick off on February 29 in Wellington . The trans-Tasmanian rivals, before the red-ball leg, battled it out across three T20Is, where the Aussies registered a onesided 3-0 victory.
In the second match of this T20I series, Conway suffered a thumb injury in Auckland last Friday. He did not keep wickets or bat in the match after the blow and was thereafter ruled out of the third match. Medical reports revealed that he didn't have a fracture but further investigation has indicated concerns with the thumb.
The Chennai Super Kings opener will undergo further assessment and treatment during the week and then undergo a recovery period. The second Test of the series starts in Christchurch on March 8. The team management has called Henry Nicholls into the squad as a replacement but Will Young will take up Conway's at the top of the order.
Talking about Conway's injury, NZ head coach, Gary Stead said, "It's disappointing for Devon to be ruled out on the eve of an important match," New Zealand coach Gary Stead said. "He's a class player batting at the top of the order for us and I know he was really looking forward to this series."
