The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday (27 December) announced India’s squad for the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. Hardik Pandya was named the captain of the side in the absence of Rohit Sharma. Meanwhile, the likes of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were also not included in the 16-man squad. Youngsters like Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, and a few others have got a chance.

Meanwhile, along with appointing Hardik Pandya as the captain of India’s T20I side, BCCI also appointed a new vice-captain for T20Is. While Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul have been the choice for vice-captain in the past, BCCI went with Suryakumar Yadav as the new vice-captain of the side. Now, the star batter has reacted to this piece of news.

When Yadav was asked how he got to know about it as he is currently with the Mumbai cricket team, playing Ranji Trophy, the batter said that his father shared the piece of news. The 32-year-old further said that he closed his eyes and checked if it was a dream or reality.

“It was not expected but the way I played last year, it feels like I have been rewarded for my performance. It feels really good and I am really looking forward to it,” said the batter to Indian Express. “I saw the list when it came. My father was the first one to share the message because he is always scrolling social media. I closed my eyes and checked if it was a dream or reality. But yes, it’s a good feeling.”

Asked if getting appointed as the vice-captain brings any extra responsibility, Surya said, “Responsibility has always been there. The position at which I bat in, pressure and responsibility are always there. But at the same time, I have been saying this for a long time now, I always look to enjoy my game and not carry any extra baggage.”
