Conor McGregor will return to action after being out for two years with a broken leg against Michael Chandler later this year. Prior to his injury, he had suffered two consecutive defeats to Dustin Poirier, and having just one win since 2016, McGregor could get a UFC title shot if he wins against Chandler. The fight will also serve as the culmination of their coaching stint on season 31 of The Ultimate Fighter.
Title contender Colby Covington has said that if he can dethrone Leon Edwards, Covington will offer his rival a shot. He expressed his admiration for McGregor in the MSCS media podcast and offered Mcgregor a title shot. Covington, the current #2 ranked welterweight contender, is expected to make his Octagon return later this year in an undisputed title fight against division kingpin, Leon Edwards. He referred to Mcgregor as a ‘history maker’ and had a lot of praiseful words for his compatriot.
Covington said in the podcast, “Conor's the ultimate showman and he's the ultimate businessman. I love what Conor's done. I hope to be able to cross paths with him and fight him someday after I win this world title against Leon 'Edward scissor hands' from the UK. That could be my next fight in line. I have nothing but respect and admiration for Conor for what he's done in this sport. He's made it possible for every fighter.”
McGregor has already won the featherweight and welterweight titles as he beat long-reigning champion Jose Aldo in 2015 before making history by defeating Eddie Alvarez for the 155lb title the following year. Mcgregor is currently coaching in the TUF season 31 and will face Chandler sometime in December this year but the dates are not yet announced.
