As the new retention rules were out, fans started anticipating new surprises and announcements that could come ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) auction. One of the most talked about cricketers ahead of IPL 2025 auction is MS Dhoni. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) haven’t made any announcements whether Dhoni will be seen playing in the upcoming season of the cash-rich league or not. However, after new retention rules, chances have also increased that CSK could retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped Indian player. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan finally broke his silence on this issue.
According to new retention rules, the franchise can retain capped players as uncapped if they haven’t played in international cricket for the last five years. Notably, MS Dhoni announced his retirement in 2020 which could also mean that CSK could retain him as an uncapped player at a lower price. However, the franchise is yet to make any announcement on this, while Dhoni also hasn’t made an announcement regarding his availability in IPL 2025.
We are not sure at this stage: CSK CEO
Kasi Viswanathan, who is the current CEO of Chennai Super Kings, recently spoke on chances of MS Dhoni getting picked as an uncapped player. Viswanathan said that the franchise may not use uncapped player retention card on the former Indian skipper. However, he didn’t make any official statement. The franchises have been given a deadline of October 31 to finalize their player retention list ahead of IPL 2025 auction.
"We are not sure at this stage. We might not even use the uncapped player retention card for MS Dhoni. It's still too early to comment on this because we haven't had discussions with him," Viswanathan was quoted as saying by Zee News.
