With 10 matches completed in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, the defending champions, Chennai Super Kings, have managed a 50 per cent win record as they lost their previous match against the Punjab Kings on Wednesday at Chepauk. Despite the loss, CSK managed the fourth spot in the IPL 2024 standings after maintaining a better net run rate than SRH and DC, who also have 10 points. However, the CSK camp has dealt with a major setback as their star seamer Deepak Chahar is likely to be ruled out of the cash-rich Indian league.
CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad lost another toss in the IPL 2024 and his team managed to register 162 runs on the board against PBKS. Gaikwad scored 62-off-48 followed by Ajinkya Rahane's 29 as Punjab spinners Rahul Chahar and Harpreet Brar picked two wickets each. CSK, who were without their star pacers Matheesha Pathirana (niggle) and Tushar Deshpande (flu), lost the game by seven wickets as PBKS chased the target in 17.5 overs.
The joint-record five-time IPL champions were already dealing with problems in their bowling unit as Bangladesh's Mustafizur Rahman has already left the IPL 2024 for international duties while Sri Lanka's Pathirana and Maheesh Theekshana have reportedly gone back for visa process, with CSK hoping for their return ahead of their next clash. During the match against PBKS, Chennai dealt another blow as Deepak Chahar walked off the field after bowling just two balls.
In the second innings, Chahar opened CSK’s bowling attack but with two balls through his over, the 31-year-old walked off the field. After bowling a dot ball, Chahar conceded a boundary but later seemed uncomfortable. Following his departure from the field, Shardul Thakur completed his over.
Before the game against PBKS, Chahar had already missed two matches this season. In a post-match interview, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming provided an update on Chahar's situation and said, "Yeah, the travelogue is pretty busy. There's a lot of ins and outs. So, Deepak Chahar doesn't look good. The initial feeling wasn't great. So, I'm hoping for a more positive report when the physio and the doctor have a look"
