Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad starred with a blistering 98 to help Chennai Super Kings beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 78 runs at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium. This was Chennai's first win after two straight defeats and will provide the Yellow Army with a vital boost as the playoff race heats up in IPL 2024. On the other hand, this was the second consecutive loss for the Sunrisers, who were defeated by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their previous fixture.
After losing the toss, the Super Kings were asked to bat first. The five-time champions continued their struggles against the new-ball as Ajinkya Rahane got out when the score was 19. But reducing CSK, Gaikwad and New Zealand's Daryll Mitchell stepped up to post a vital 107-run stand. The Kiwi all-rounder posted his highest score of the season (52) before getting out.
While the new CSK captain continued his brilliant form, he was joined by Shivam Dube. Gaikwad was dismissed at a score of 98 in 54 balls with 10 fours and three sixes after he and Dube combined to post 64. Finishing things off, the Southpaw from Mumbai chipped in with a 20-ball 39 to help CSK post a massive 213-run total.
Then with the ball, Chennai continued this momentum as Tushar Deshpande picked up three quick wickets to break the back of the chase for Hyderabad. After this early collapse, the Super Kings gradually picked the remaining SRH wickets to fall short by a massive 78 runs. Hyderabad were bundled out for 134 with Aiden Markram's 32. Whereas for Chennai, Deshpande was the star of the bowling as he ended up with career-best figures of 4-27 in three overs.
