Daniele De Rossi was appointed as the new AS Roma coach after the club sacked José Mourinho on Janu ary 16, Tuesday. Mourinho had spent two years at the club and his contract was due to expire in June, but the Serie A club updated the fans with a new announcement on Tuesday. With this, Rossi returned to his hometown club, where he spent almost his entire playing career.
AS Roma announced on Tuesday and said, “AS Roma can confirm that José Mourinho and his coaching staff will leave the club with immediate effect.” The owners of the club Dan and Ryan Friedkin said, “We would like to thank José on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club. We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.”
Roma announced De Rossi’s appointment in an official statement and said, “AS Roma is pleased to announce that Daniele De Rossi has been appointed as the new Technical Manager of the First Team until 30 June 2024. Welcome home, Daniele!”
De Rossi won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, but his span with the club was decent with just two trophies, including two Italian Cups and the 2007 Italian Super Cup. Talking about Mourinho, the 60-year-old had said that he wanted to extend his contract with Roma. The decision came after Roma recorded a 1-3 defeat against AC Milan, which left him in ninth place in the Italian Serie A. Earlier, the club was eliminated by Lazio in an Italian Cup derby last week.
