In the final match of the WPL 2024 league stage between Delhi Capitals Women and Gujarat Giants at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday, the home side dominated the Giants to a 7-wicket win with 41 balls remaining. India opener Shafali Verma and Marizanne Kapp-led bowling unit helped the Capitals register the most wins (6) this season by any team.
After winning the toss, Giants skipper Beth Mooney decided to bat first, and with the help of lower-order batters, the visitors managed 126 runs on the board at a loss of nine wickets. The Giants lost five wickets without reaching the 50-run mark, then arrived Bharati Fulmali, who scored 42 runs and combined for a 68-run partnership with Kathryn Emma Bryce (28*) for the sixth wicket.
For the Capitals, Marizanne Kapp was the most economical bowler, who bowled at least two overs, as she picked two wickets at an economy of 4.25. India spinner Minnu Mani and Shikha Pandey picked up two wickets each while Jess Jonassen also scalped one.
Capitals skipper Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma kick-started the chase, however, the Aussie batter lost her wicket on the first ball of the fourth over while Delhi lost another wicket in the same over. But the 20-year-old Indian set her eyes on the target and combined for a 94-run partnership with compatriot Jemmimah Rodrigues. Shafali smashed seven fours and five sixes on her way to 71 runs in 37 balls. Shafali lost her wicket on the penultimate delivery as Delhi won the match by seven wickets with 41 balls remaining.
