Veteran South Africa batter Dean Elgar has announced retirement from international cricket. Elgar had communicated his decision to Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Thursday, 21 December, ahead of the Test series against India. Notably, the two-match Test series, which is scheduled to kickstart from December 26 in Centurion will be his last in the Protean colours.
“As they say, ‘all good things come to an end’, and the Indian home series will be my last as I have made the decision to retire from our beautiful game,” Elgar was quoted in CSA’s release. He further added that the Cape Town Test will be his last, calling the Newlands as his favourite stadium.
“Having the opportunity to represent my country and the learnings I’ve had along my journey is something I’ll always be thankful for. It’s most definitely been the best learning experience of my life,” he further quoted in his statement, extending his gratitude to all including his family, partner, teammates, sponsors, fans and others.
“For now, I look forward to the series coming up and excited about what the future holds for me,” the veteran concluded. Notably, CEO of Cricket south Africa also extended his gratitude towards Elgar, quoting, “We would like to than Dean for his services over the years. He has represented his country with honour and has been a real ambassador for Cricket South Africa, always playing with hi heart on his sleeve. His grittiness and determination are two qualities that really stood out; and these are attributes that all South Africans can relate to.”
Speaking of the South African, the 36-year-old has scored 5146 runs from 84 matches, which his highest scored being 199. The first Test will be played from December 26 to 30 at the SuperSport Park in Centurion, the second will be held from January 3 to 7 at the Newlands in Cape Town.
