With key players and coach Ricky Ponting already in house ahead of the IPL 2021, Delhi Capitals are all set to make some major decisions. With Shreyas Iyer pulling out of the 14th edition owing to injury, who will lead the side in this edition? However, the question  has now been answered, eventually putting an end to the fans' curiosity.

Shreyas Iyer suffered a labrum tear on his left shoulder while fielding in the second ODI against England which ruled him out of the series and the upcoming IPL season. According to recent reports, Iyer will undergo a surgery on April 8, a day prior to the commencement of the mega-event, sidelining him for another 3-4 months.

Rishabh Pant to lead Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021

The Delhi-based franchise have announced their new skipper for the upcoming edition of the marquee event. DC promoters Kiran Kumar and co-owner Parth Jindel along with coach Ricky Ponting were to take a final call on the skipper. The side will be led by none other than Rishabh in IPL 2021.

Ajinkya Rahane, Ravichandran Ashwin and former Australia skipper Steve Smith were also in the race to lead the side. Read More. However, DC decided to choose Pant as their new captain.

"Delhi is where I grew up, and where my IPL journey began six years ago. To lead this team one day is a dream I've always harboured. And today, as that dream comes true, I feel humbled. With an amazing coaching staff, and a plethora of accomplished seniors around me, I can't wait to give my absolute best for Delhi Capitals," said Pant on his new role as DC captain.

Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting said, “This is a tremendous opportunity for young Rishabh, who is coming off successful stints against Australia and England which will no doubt give him the confidence needed to take on a new role that comes with a lot more responsibility. The coaching group is excited to work with him, and we can’t wait for the season to get started.”

Delhi Capitals will begin their IPL 2021 campaign on April 10 against Chennai Super Kings.
