In a shocking turn of events, Detroit Pistons forward Isaiah Stewart was arrested after a 116-100 loss against the Phoenix Suns at the Footprint Centre. Kevin Durant dropped 25 for the Suns while Pistons were led by Simone Fontecchio's 18 points. But before the game, Isaiah Stewart, who was ruled out due to an injury, reportedly punched Phoenix backup Drew Eubanks.
In the incident, as per a police statement, several people saw two players get into an argument near the arena’s parking entrance roughly two hours before tipoff. The argument “escalated” after Stewart punched Eubanks before the security stepped in to separate the two players. The Pistons' big man was issued a citation for assault and released.
The attack on Drew Eubanks was unprovoked: Phoenix Suns
Ahead of the game, Phoenix Suns promptly released a statement saying “The attack on Drew Eubanks was unprovoked, and acts of violence such as this are unacceptable. We unequivocally support Drew, and will continue to work with local law enforcement and the NBA.”
The thing is to get all of the information: Detroit coach Monty Williams
Meanwhile, Detroit Pistons were not as emphatic in their press release. The Pistons said, “We are in the process of gathering information about what happened and what provoked it, and responding to the NBA and local authorities.”
Detroit coach Monty Williams also had a similar response to the incident, He said, “The thing is to get all of the information. The NBA will do an investigation. For me to come here and make a statement would be a bit irresponsible. ... You really don’t know. … There is a time for the information to be gathered and then you can make a statement.”
