In a major development from the world of cricket, there will be no Decision Review System (DRS) made available for the one-off women’s Test match, which will be played between South Africa and England. At the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein from December 15 to 18, South Africa women will be playing their first home Test in 22 years, and on this big occasion, the Cricket South Africa (CSA) have decided to not make the DRS available.
Notably, as per the report from ESPNcricinfo, the CSA have opted to prioritise the utilisation of DRS for the white-ball matches as far as the South African women’s cricket team are concerned. But, at the same time, the CSA had spent a lot of money to use the technology at home for the first-time ever in women’s cricket this season during the T20I and ODI series, which were won by England against South Africa with a 3-0 and 2-1 scoreline respectively.
The white-ball formats were prioritised with regards to DRS for this tour: Enoch Nkwe
With that, this will be only one international match out of 21 played by South Africa men and women during their home summer, wherein the DRS won’t be utilised. In her response on the matter, Enoch Nkwe, the Director of national teams and high performance at the CSA, said, “The inclusion of the DRS for the ongoing inbound tour against England was agreed upon at the planning stage of the tour, noting that it will be the first time it was used for women's bilateral tours in South Africa in recent history.”
Enoch Nkwe also gave the reason as to why the DRS was used only for white-ball cricket and not red-ball cricket in regards to the South African women’s cricket team. He remarked, “The white-ball formats were prioritised with regards to DRS for this tour as it directly impacted the Proteas Women's rankings in T20I cricket and the Women's Championship as well as the overall CSA strategy for the senior women's national team.”
