Sri Lanka have been handed another major blow in the ongoing T20 World Cup. Star pacer Dushmantha Chameera is reportedly ruled out of the remainder of marquee tournament after he suffered a calf injury during their match against UAE on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old, who played a key role in Sri Lanka’s win over UAE in T20 World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday, had missed the 2022 Asia Cup because of a calf injury. However, the star cricketer was later declared fit and named in the 15-member squad for T20 World Cup.
Chameera, who registered the figures of 3/15 in Sri Lanka’s 79 runs win over the Emirates nation suffered the injury in the last over of his spell and left the field in pain.
While he was sure to miss the side's final qualifying round match against Netherlands, scheduled to take place on October 20 in Geelong, the update of his injury was confirmed by Arjuna de Silva. "He's out of the tournament definitely, but he might also use the break to do the nakle surgery that he's been needing," Arjuna de Silva told ESPNcricinfo post their win over UAE.
Notably, Pramod Madushan and Danushka Gunathilka are two more players with injury concerns. Both the cricketers are due for scans after suffering hamstring injuries. Kasun Rajitha is set to replace Chameera in the 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup.
