EA has announced the latest edition of their new annual football video game, called EA SPORTS FC 24. The iconic franchise has decided on Manchester City’s star striker Erling Haaland as this year’s cover footballer. Previous choices have been Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk and many other footballing superstars.

This is the first edition of the game which will be without the FIFA name as  EA and the global footballing organisation announced a split after more than 2 decades of collaboration under the federation’s name. EA revealed they had refused to re-sign a deal with FIFA because they were not willing to pay the premium demanded. Instead, they have decided to go in a new direction with the FC series, starting with FC 24. In response to the news, FIFA announced their own game.

FC 24 is available to pre-order now and releases on 29th September, a month into the new football season. The cover features Haaland preparing to take a shot at goal, something he has done so expertly this past season. EA also showed glimpses of the gameplay, which will feature the ability to manage clubs and play online.

Haaland Was The Natural Choice

Having come off one of the greatest striking seasons in football history, Haaland was the natural choice to be the marketing focal point for the new game.  The Norwegian scored 52 times for Manchester City in all competitions on the way to winning a treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

This is especially remarkable given it is the player’s first season in England, having joined from Borussia Dortmund only last summer. He also broke the premier league record for most goals in a single campaign as well as Manchester City’s record for most goals in a season by a single player.

Haaland will be on tour with Manchester City in Asia before playing in the FA Community Shield game against Arsenal in August.
