The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Monday, April 7 announced limited-overs vice-captain Harry Brook as the new captain of the Three Lions. Brook, who was announced Jos Buttler’s deputy earlier this year in January ahead of England’s white-ball series against India, has been officially appointed as the captain after the Buttler stepped down from the position following dismal performance in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 in February-March 2025.

After Buttler’s decision to resign from the position, sources close to developments informed that Brook was the first-choice pick to take over the reins. However, the 26-year-old could not contribute much with the bat in the white-ball series against India as well as the Champions Trophy, he has been a vital player in the England setup.

Harry Brook to lead England in ODIs and T20Is

Soon after being appointed the skipper of the side, Harry Brook expressed excitement and also extended gratitude towards his family, friends and his coaches. "It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain. Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me,” Brook said.

"I want to thank my family and coaches who’ve supported me every step of the way. Their belief in me has made all the difference and I wouldn’t be in this position without them. There’s so much talent in this country, and I’m looking forward to getting started, moving us forward, and working towards winning series, World Cups and major events,” he further continued, as mentioned in the release.

The 26-year-old batter, is often regarded as one of the country’s most gifted batters across formats. As he takes over the leadership role with the Three Lions, it is to be noted that it will not be his first stint as captain as he previously led the side against Australia last September in absence of Jos Buttler. Furthermore, Brook has also led the England side at the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand.

Speaking of his numbers, Brook has played 26 ODIs, scoring 816 runs at an average of 34. In the shortest format of the game, Brook has featured in 44 T20Is, amassing 798 runs at an average of 28.50.
