England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Sunday, December 22 announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025. Notably, the announcement comes very early seeing the Champions Trophy take place in February-March 2025 in Pakistan along with a few matches being held at a neutral venue.
While the side will be led by Jos Buttler, who is the designated white-ball captain of England cricket team, Joe Root is a notable inclusion, who is set to mark his return in the 50-over setup for the first time since the ICC Men’s World Cup in November 2023.
Joe Root returns; Ben Stokes not considered for selection
While Root’s inclusion comes as a benchmark in the ODI setup, England’s red-ball captain Ben Stokes remains to be out of the side after he sustained a hamstring injury in the recently concluded three-match Test series against New Zealand. “Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes was not considered for selection as he continues to be assessed following a left hamstring injury sustained during the third Test match against New Zealand earlier this month,” England Cricket said in its release.
Moreover, Head Coach Brendon McCullum will lead the side in the white-ball tour, which departs on January 17, 2025, seeing the white-ball tour against India preceeding the Champions Trophy. Additionally, England are placed in Group B, alongside Australia, Afghanistan, and South Africa.
