England pacer Mark Wood will see a specialist in the upcoming week to determine if he needs to go through a surgery for his left knee which got injured during the Champions Trophy 2025 game against Afghanistan in Lahore held on February 26. The pacer felt knee discomfort his fourth over and following the pain, he wasn't present on the field for the next 10 overs. However, he returned to bowl the next four overs, but was seen struggling with his leg. England will return to their homeland after playing their final match of the mega event against South Africa in Karachi on March 1.
Sometime this month, the England pacer will undergo a scan which will help his specialist to know the severity of the conundrum. Wood’s 10-year international career has faced hurdles due to injuries. Back in 2019, he was out of cricketing action for five months as he went through an operation on the same knee. In 2022, he faced issues with his left knee again which led to another surgery.
The 35-year-old is an essential part of England due to his fast-bowling prowess. In the upcoming months, the English side will host Team India for five Tests and Wood will be expected to recover from the injury before the crucial assignment at home. Before Wood, all-rounder Brydon Carse also suffered a toe injury against Australia on February 22. The injury ruled out Carse from the competition.
England to play for pride against South Africa in final Group B game in Champions Trophy
In the final Group B contest, England will take on South Africa at Karachi’s National Bank Stadium on Saturday. The English side are already out of the knockout race after their defeat against the Afghan side. Jos Buttler and his men will look to beat the Proteas and conclude their campaign on a positive note.
Buttler will be seen leading England as regular captain for the last time as the 34-year-old relinquished his team’s white-ball captaincy after he failed to be impactful as skipper in the ongoing ODI extravaganza.
